What We Replace: Keys, Fobs, Transponders, and Smart Keys

Modern vehicles rely on three distinct layers of security: the physical cut of the blade, the transponder chip embedded inside the key head, and — in newer models — a rolling-code remote or proximity fob. Lose any one of these and your car may not start even if you get the door open. At T & Y Keys Rockaway, we handle all three in a single mobile visit. For older vehicles (generally pre-1995) that use a simple mechanical key, we cut a precision duplicate on the spot. For the vast majority of vehicles from the mid-1990s onward, we cut the blade and then program the transponder chip to match your car's immobilizer system so the engine will actually start.

For push-to-start vehicles — increasingly common in everything from a Honda Civic to a BMW 5 Series to a Ford F-150 — we also program proximity smart keys and key fobs. If your remote lock or unlock has stopped working, we can diagnose whether the issue is a dead battery, a failed fob, or a synchronization problem and resolve it on-site. We carry blank keys and fobs compatible with makes including Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Lexus, Acura, Mazda, and many others.

How the Replacement Process Works

When you call, we ask you for your vehicle's year, make, model, and — if available — your VIN. This lets our technician load the right blank key and software profile before arriving, which keeps your wait time short. Once on-site, we verify ownership (a valid ID and proof of registration or title is required for all key replacements — this protects you as much as it protects us), then get to work. Key cutting is done with an automotive-grade code cutter or by decoding the existing lock if you still have access to the car. Transponder and fob programming is performed through your vehicle's OBD-II port or, for certain makes that require it, through direct EEPROM access to the immobilizer module.

We always aim for a damage-free process. We do not drill locks, force ignitions, or use destructive entry methods unless every other option has been exhausted and you have been clearly informed beforehand. For most passenger vehicles, key cutting and basic transponder programming takes 20–45 minutes on-site. Smart key and proximity fob programming for certain European or Japanese luxury vehicles may take slightly longer due to the additional security handshake those systems require, but we walk you through the timeline before we start.

Pricing: What Affects the Cost and How We Handle Quotes

Car key replacement pricing varies based on several real factors: the type of key your vehicle requires (a standard transponder key costs significantly less to replace than a high-security smart key or a dealer-exclusive fob), the make and model of your vehicle, the time of day, and whether you need one replacement key or a full set. European luxury brands, for example, often require a longer programming sequence and more expensive blanks than a domestic sedan. A basic transponder key for a common Honda or Toyota is a very different job than a proximity smart key for a late-model Mercedes or a high-security laser-cut key for an Audi.

We do not publish flat-rate prices online because quoting a number without knowing your specific vehicle would be misleading. What we do instead: when you call us, we gather your vehicle details and give you a firm, confirmed price before our technician ever leaves for your location. There are no surprise charges when the job is done. The price we quote is the price you pay. We accept cash and major credit cards, and we're available to provide a receipt for insurance or employer reimbursement purposes.

Serving Rockaway, the Five Towns, and the JFK Corridor Around the Clock

T & Y Keys Rockaway is based in Rockaway, NY and provides mobile car key replacement throughout the surrounding communities — including Far Rockaway, Arverne, Belle Harbor, Broad Channel, and Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Woodmere, and Inwood in the Five Towns, as well as the roads and parking areas around JFK International Airport. If you're a rideshare driver, airport employee, or traveler who's lost a key near the terminals or in the surrounding lots, we are one of the few 24/7 mobile locksmiths with consistent response coverage in that corridor.

Because we're mobile, you never have to arrange a tow to a dealership or wait until business hours Monday morning. Our van is stocked and ready to roll any hour of the day or night, including weekends and holidays. A dealer key replacement often means scheduling an appointment, paying a tow, and waiting days for a programmed key to arrive. We typically arrive within an hour and complete the work at your location — saving you time, towing costs, and the hassle of coordinating with a service department.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a car key if I have no copy at all — not even the original?+

Yes. Having no existing key is actually very common. We can generate a key cut from your vehicle's VIN or by decoding the lock cylinders, then program a new transponder or smart key to your immobilizer from scratch. This process is sometimes called a 'key from scratch' or 'all-keys-lost' situation and is something we handle regularly. We will require proof of ownership before performing this service.

Do I need to go to the dealer for a smart key or push-to-start key replacement?+

Not necessarily. For the vast majority of vehicles with push-to-start systems, we have the programming equipment to create and code a working proximity smart key on-site. A small number of rare or very new models may have programming that only the dealer's proprietary software can access, and if that's the case we'll tell you honestly before charging you anything. In our experience, the need to refer to a dealer is the exception, not the rule.

My key fob works for entry but the car won't start. Is that a key issue or a car issue?+

Most likely a transponder issue. The remote portion of a fob (lock/unlock) and the transponder chip that authorizes engine start are two separate functions. If your fob controls the doors but the car cranks without starting, the transponder signal is either failing or has lost its pairing with the immobilizer. We can diagnose this on-site and, in most cases, reprogram or replace the transponder chip without replacing the entire fob or key blade.

How long does a mobile car key replacement take?+

For standard transponder keys on common domestic or Japanese vehicles, plan on roughly 20–40 minutes from the time we arrive. Push-to-start or proximity smart key programming, especially for European luxury brands, can take 30–60 minutes depending on the vehicle's security protocol. We can give you a more specific time estimate when you call with your vehicle details.

Is it safe to call a mobile locksmith for a key replacement? How do I know you're legitimate?+

T & Y Keys Rockaway is fully licensed and insured, and we operate as a local, physically based business in Rockaway, NY — not a national call-center locksmith broker that dispatches unknown contractors. We will ask to see your ID and vehicle registration before cutting or programming any key. If a locksmith ever refuses to show credentials, quotes one price on the phone and charges dramatically more on-site, or pressures you to skip proof-of-ownership verification, those are serious red flags. We operate transparently and confirm all pricing before starting any work.

Can you cut and program a key for a car that's been towed to a lot near JFK?+

Yes. As long as we can access the vehicle and you have proof of ownership, we can come directly to the impound or storage lot. We serve the entire JFK corridor and surrounding areas around the clock. Just give us the address and your vehicle details when you call and we'll confirm availability and pricing before dispatching.
