BMW Key Types We Replace and Program
Modern BMW vehicles don't use a simple metal key — every key contains layers of technology designed to prevent theft. The most common type we service is the transponder key, which carries an embedded microchip that must be electronically paired to your car's immobilizer system before the engine will start. If the chip isn't recognized, the car won't turn over even if the key turns in the ignition. We program transponder keys on-site using professional-grade equipment.
Newer BMW models use a remote key fob — a combined key and remote that locks, unlocks, and may also fold the mirrors or open the trunk remotely. Many BMWs from the last decade use a comfort access smart key (also called a proximity key), which allows you to start the car with the push of a button without ever taking the key out of your pocket. These require specialized programming tools to sync correctly with your BMW's systems, and our technicians carry that equipment with them on every call throughout the Rockaways, Five Towns, and the JFK corridor.
