Types of Acura Keys We Replace
Acura has transitioned through several generations of key technology over the years, and the type of key your vehicle uses directly affects how replacement works. Older Acura models from the late 1990s and early 2000s may use a basic transponder key — a traditional cut key with an embedded microchip that must be programmed to communicate with your car's immobilizer system. Without proper programming, even a correctly cut key won't start the engine. Mid-range models often use a remote head key or key fob combo, where the fob for locking and unlocking is integrated directly into the key blade itself.
Newer Acura models — particularly the MDX, RDX, TLX, and RLX from the last several years — use proximity smart keys with push-button ignition. These keyless entry systems detect your key fob when it's within a certain range and allow you to start the car without ever inserting anything into the ignition. Replacing these requires specialized programming equipment to sync the new fob to your vehicle's computer. We carry the tools and blank keys needed to handle all of these scenarios and can program them on-site, which means no flatbedding your car to a dealer in Garden City or beyond.
